Sciatica Vs. Herniated Disc

Sciatica and Herniated Disc

Sciatica

The sciatic nerve is your largest nerve. The sciatic nerve, located in the spine and composed of five nerve roots. This nerve runs down the backs and sides of both legs. It can be affected by dysfunction. It can even reach the feet.

Herniated Disc

These cushion-like elements, which look like a sponge, protect your vertebrae. They are filled with a gel-like liquid. This fluid presses against the disc’s hard shell, causing pain.

It’s the difference

Sciatica can be treated quickly, which is one of the main differences between them. For herniated discs, however, you will need to take more care. They are a serious condition that can last a lifetime. If left untreated, it can have a severe impact on your quality of life. Both conditions are easily mistaken for each other at the beginning. It can be hard to tell which condition is at play without the diagnostic tools that we have discussed. An MRI may be required in some cases to allow clinicians to see all of the involved systems and make an accurate diagnosis.

Sometimes, sciatica can be caused by a herniated disc, but it is rarely the reverse. These are the main differences between sciatica and herniated disc.
